Why Tech Leaders Are Following Google to Portland

August 30, 2019

first_img Register Now » I never truly experienced the great Portland-Seattle tech migration first hand. Oh, sure, I always heard about it in the background. People couldn’t afford the Bay Area, so periodically various acquaintances might disappear to the rainy north.Skilled American tech workers are leaving the Bay Area faster than they are arriving, so I haven’t been all that surprised. It didn’t really hit home, though, until recent months when a long-time, close coworker and friend, Janine Kahn, who I worked with at Village Voice Media in days gone by, decided to get out of Dodge (or San Francisco in my case). She’d always been one of my best San Francisco media friends, and we shared countless lunches and cupcakes. Time marches on though, and she eventually got an even better position running the digital editorial side of Lumina Media. Even more importantly, she found a good man, who became her husband. This good man found a fancy job in Oregon.“My husband, who also works in tech, got a job as a senior engineer at a dev. agency in Portland, and I work remote, so we decided to give it a shot,” she says. “It doesn’t hurt that we’re renting an entire house for less than our SF one-bedroom now.”Yes, that type of story forms much the core of why there’s a Pacific Northwest tech migration.Google gets in the act.Of course, Google is a part of this major tech trend as well. They recently decided to open offices in Portland too. The move makes Portland one of the latest locations across the globe for the company, including Austin, Los Angeles, Milan, Mexico and Egypt. A local presence gives Google and other companies the ability to better serve customers in each area. This is just a harbinger of things to come. As Portland grows, even more businesses will join Google there. The area has already had a tech worker influx rivaled only by the country’s biggest tech hubs. Here are a few reasons Portland, like Austin, Seattle and others, is capturing the attention of the Silicon Valley worker.Thriving tech industry.Between 2010 and 2013, Portland’s tech talent pool increased by 28 percent, which was a faster rate than Silicon Valley, where the talent pool grew only 20.8 percent. Even Austin, which has long been home to Apple, Google and othe huge tech companies, had slower growth than Portland at 26.5 percent. With so many talented professionals now, Portland has become a popular location for tech giants and startups alike.Hewlett Packard, eBay, Salesforce, New Relic and Airbnb are just a few of the tech companies with offices in Portland. But the city has plenty of its own tech companies, giving it the nickname “Silicon Forest.” The city is the hometown of Tripwire, Digital Trends and Cloudability, as well as numerous other startups and corporations in a variety of industries. This has created a culture of innovation in Northwest Oregon that makes new companies want to locate there.Low cost of living. This is the preeminent reason why workers are looking to leave Silicon Valley. A tech worker can live much more comfortably in Portland than San Francisco or Palo Alto, with much lower housing costs. While tech workers can easily earn six figures in Silicon Valley, tech-sector salaries in Portland are on the rise, up 9 percent between 2013 and 2014. From 2008 to 2014, Portland’s tech salaries increased 18 percent.Like Silicon Valley, the closer you get to Portland’s tech hub, the more expensive the housing is. However, many of the area’s technology workers choose to live in one of the more affordable suburbs of Portland, which also gives families access to great schools. Depending on a worker’s willingness to commute, there are several suburbs that are good places to live. It adds up to something much more attractive than the nasty commute along the various highways throughout the Bay Area.Work-life balance.Work-life balance is often mentioned as a benefit to living in the Portland area. Part of this could be the growing popularity of telecommuting in the city. One study revealed that 7 percent of the city’s workers now work from home and that number is growing. Nationally, 2.6 percent of the workforce telecommutes on a daily basis, making Portland a preferred city for those who want a commute that involves merely walking a few steps to a home office. Studies have shown that working from home allows for a better work-life balance, which is a priority for some of the top up-and-coming technology professionals.Tech workers increasingly seek work-life balance, especially those whose work requires long hours and years of dedication. Portland offers a wide variety of options for tech workers with hobbies, from its big music scene to its museums and art galleries. Many other cities have this, as well, but a shorter work commute and the ability to work from home could help tech workers relieve the pressure they feel in other tech hubs as they try to find a work-life balance that often seems to elude them.Portland is one of many areas seeing rapid growth due to technology companies. With so many professionals choosing the area, it will only continue to attract more organizations looking to capitalize on talent there. The tantalizing lifestyle of the city gives workers a combination of affordability and fun that can’t be found at the center of the tech world. This is good though. A healthy U.S. tech economy can’t be located in one region. It needs to be a part of mutliple regions, so it can drive greater benefit for the national economy as a whole. 5 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. An Entrepreneurs Guide to Inventing

August 30, 2019

first_img 4 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global When starting a business, almost every entrepreneur asks themselves whether their idea is patentable. Patents provide a way to secure your idea, but navigating through the patent process is a world of its own.To start understanding the invention world, it’s crucial to know there are two main kinds of patents: Utility and Design. Utility patents are foundational in nature, involving a system, method, process or underlying technology. They have a lifespan of up to twenty years. Design patents, on the other hand, focus on protecting ornamental features of a product. They typically have a lifespan of fifteen years.Though patents could be crucial to your business, there are several Fortune 500 companies that have kept their core formula a trade secret. Instead of publishing their formulas, brands like Coca-Cola and Heinz opted to go straight to market and keep their formulas for developing soda and ketchup a secret. Their trade secrets are now worth billions.Related: 5 Steps for Turning Your Invention Ideas Into a ProductSince most patents can be very expensive, most bootstrapped entrepreneurs will start with a provisional patent. A provisional patent can be filed for both types of patents and will secure your invention for a twelve-month period, after which you would need to file a formal non-provisional patent. Regardless of which patent approach you take, the absolute first step in the patent process is a novelty search. A novelty search will help you understand what patents exist in your idea’s realm and how your idea is unique compared to other patents that exist. To get started with a novelty search, take one of the three approaches below:1. Hire an attorney.Patent attorneys will be happy to perform a novelty lookup, yet this will typically run you $1,500-$50,000. The cost all depends on the scope of the search. The cheaper it is the less time the attorney spent in discovery. It’s typical that attorneys cover only 40% to 70% of what is really out there.Related: How Can I Legally Improve a Product I Didn’t Create?Pro tip: One aspect of patents to touch upon before you begin your search is the whitespace between patents. This refers to the area that your idea could cover, between other patents that exist.2. Utilize Google.           One of the most overlooked Google tools is its database of patents. It’s free and is only limited by the time you have to search through it. Be aware, though, when conducting a novelty search for your own invention, that you’ll often be blind of other uses or applications in a patent. Google also leaves out the understanding of whitespace between patents. On the plus side, Google allows for research in publications, products and patents, whereas the attorneys usually limit their search to patents only.3. Try Loci.A new technology that has inventors and the IP industry buzzing, Loci is a Washington D.C.-based startup that offers an easy-to-use novelty lookup tool. The technology pulls from patent databases, publications and product databases to offer a comprehensive search. Unlike other platforms, it offers suggested keywords in context and showcases categories that allow the users to recognize disparate applications. This tool also helps inventors recognize whitespace immediately. If the inventor does determine their invention exists, it’s easy to see where it doesn’t or recognize a reasonable pivot.Related: How to Protect Your Business Idea Without a PatentWhatever path you take, understand there are people out there to help. Though you may be scared of someone stealing your idea, there are far fewer people out there like that than you’d imagine. Plus, it’s not hard to protect yourself from theft. As John Wise, CEO of Loci, advises his clients, “Before you do anything else, write your idea down and send it via certified mail to yourself. Even better, sell one of your prototypes to a friend for as little as $1. Make sure you document the process. It’s substantially more difficult to steal an idea after this. Most people will be turned off from trying to steal your idea if you tell them that it’s published or documented.”With the patent process seemingly always leading to confusion for entrepreneurs, it’s crucial to start by conducting a novelty search to see if your idea is even patentable. Now that you know the best ways to conduct a search, it’s time for you to start!  Register Now » February 15, 2017 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Those are both great systems, but they don’t exactly hit the mark in all the categories I need. What I want is a laptop that can function as a premium gaming laptop just as well as it works as a business machine. What does that mean? Well, I want a laptop that I can comfortably play games on but also to take to work and use to write articles for over 8 hours without the machine dying: my very own white whale.MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro: Which 13-inch MacBook Is Right For You?Apple’s entry-level MacBook Air and Pro look pretty similar, but our testing proved they differ in crucial ways.Your Recommended PlaylistVolume 0%Press shift question mark to access a list of keyboard shortcutsKeyboard Shortcutsplay/pauseincrease volumedecrease volumeseek forwardsseek backwardstoggle captionstoggle fullscreenmute/unmuteseek to %SPACE↑↓→←cfm0-9接下来播放Which Cheap Tablet Is Best? A premium aluminum chassis is a necessity.I love the Razer Blade 15’s external design, as it has a tight, sturdy body, so we’ll use that as a base. However, instead of Mercury White, we’ll paint it silver, like the XPS 15. I do love the Mercury White, but I prefer a more discreet, businesslike design. For the interior, we’ll also take more of a business approach and use some elements from the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5. We’ll go with a black keyboard with two top-firing speakers on either side of it. However, for bezels, no laptop does it better than the new XPS 15, and that’s because Dell made its own tiny, proprietary, top-facing webcam to maintain the display’s InfinityEdge design.SpecsThis baby is going to be outfitted with, at the very least, an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.These are pretty standard specs for thin-and-light gaming laptops, but if I wanted to go nuts, I would want to ramp up the storage to a 1TB SSD — but not just any SSD. I’m talking about a devilish MacBook Pro-level SSD — you know, the one with 2GB-plus transfer speeds. Apple doesn’t have a monopoly on fast SSDs, so get to work, laptop makers.DisplayFor the display, I’m a reasonable man. All I want is a 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080, matte panel that utilizes Nvidia G-Sync technology and has a refresh rate of 144 Hz. I’m not asking for 4K or even OLED, but what I want is a reasonably bright and vivid panel.I’d like to see a minimum of 150% of the sRGB color gamut covered, which is totally plausible, as we’ve seen with the Lenovo Legion Y7000 and the Dell G5 15 SE. In regards to brightness, however, I want at least 350 nits, which we did clock on laptops like the XPS 15.Keyboard and TouchpadIt’s easy to request a thick, comfortable keyboard, like the one on the Area-51m, but we’re not going to get a keyboard that badass in a laptop that’s only 0.7 inches thick. However, the perfect keyboard for my dream laptop isn’t a gaming one; instead, it’s one directly from HP’s EliteBook line. The EliteBooks sport some of the best keyboards and touchpads around, especially for business laptops. I need something that’s not only comfortable, but also agile enough that I can blast through articles in no time. The EliteBook x360 1040 G5 has the most tactile and responsive keyboard I’ve tested so far on a thin notebook. The only thing I would change would be to give it full-size arrow keys and function keys.I would also take everything about the EliteBook’s touchpad, as the premium glass design makes that pad incomparably soft. However, I’d make my touchpad as big as the Razer Blade 15’s 5 x 3-inch version, which extends to the very edge of the deck. And Windows 10 Precision drivers are a must. (I can’t believe I have to say that.)AudioI just want something that doesn’t sound like it’s coming out of a tin can. As soon as Rami Tabari sprung out of the College of Staten Island, he hit the ground running as a Staff Writer for Laptop Mag. He reviews every shape and form of a laptop as well as all sorts of cool tech. You can find him sitting at his desk surrounded by a hoarder’s dream of laptops, and when he navigates his way out to civilization, you can catch him watching really bad anime or playing some kind of painfully difficult game. He’s the best at every game and he just doesn’t lose. That’s why you’ll occasionally catch his byline in Tom’s Guide, taking on the latest Souls-like challenge. But seriously, getting a good pair of speakers in a gaming laptop is harder than I’d like to admit, which is why I mostly listen to audio via headphones. However, if I had to choose, I’d go with the top-firing Bang & Olufsen speakers in the HP EliteBook 840 G5. Those speakers had a great handle on bass, and the sound was full and accurately depicted the depth in any song I played.Battery LifeI want 8 hours of battery life. Just hear me out. I know battery life can be touch and go, especially because a lot of gaming laptops can barely achieve 3 hours. But we’ve recently seen some pretty wild numbers on strong, thin gaming laptops. The Razer Blade 15 nailed 5 hours and 2 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, and even better than that, the Gigabyte Aero 15 Classic survived a ridiculous 6 hours and 58 minutes on a charge. Both gaming laptops come armed with RTX 2070 GPUs, so while 8 hours might seem like a stretch right now, we’re really only an hour away from that paradise.OutlookLets recap: My dream laptop is a thin-and-light 15.6-inch gaming notebook with strong overall performance, a vivid 144-Hz display, a punchy keyboard, a pair of bangin’ speakers and workday-long battery life. What I want will probably be expensive and a pain in the ass to make, but it is possible. Most of my requests have appeared in some form or another in other laptops.Look at it this way: If we’re getting ridiculous dual-screen laptops and foldable notebooks, my request isn’t too far-fetched. So, let’s see who can make my dream gaming laptop first.last_img read more

Geek Uninstaller remove Windows apps

August 29, 2019

first_imgGeek Uninstaller: remove Windows apps by Martin Brinkmann on June 22, 2016 in Software – Last Update: June 23, 2016 – 31 commentsThe latest version of Geek Uninstaller, a third-party solution for Windows to remove installed software, supports removing Windows apps.Geek Uninstaller is one of a handful of programs that you can use as an alternative for Windows’ built-in uninstaller.Just like Revo Uninstaller and others, it supports not only the removal of programs, but also the scanning for leftovers so that traces left on the device after uninstallation are removed as well. The most recent update of Geek Uninstaller, version 1.4.0.82, introduced support for Windows Store applications to the desktop program.Remove Windows appsGeek Uninstaller does not merge Windows apps and the list of desktop programs which means that it maintains separate listings for desktop programs and Windows Store apps.Select View > Windows Store Apps to switch the listing to apps installed from the store. Geek Uninstaller lists applications with their name, size and installation date.App Removal is simpleRight-click on any app in the listing and select uninstall from the context menu that opens.Geek Uninstaller removes the app from the system, and displays the leftover prompt afterwards. This prompt lists Registry entries that are related to the application which you can remove as well.Geek Uninstaller supports the removal of system applications. It is important to note that you may run into troubles restoring removed system applications. If you remove the Store application for instance, you cannot use the Store anymore and won’t be able to download the app again. This leaves PowerShell as the option to restore removed Windows applications.Apart from uninstalling Windows applications outright, you may also use other features provided by Geek Uninstaller. The right-click menu provides you with options to open the application folder on the local drive, or jump to the apps’ Registry entry instead.Other than that, you may also open it on Windows Store using Geek Uninstaller — provided that you have not removed the Store application — or run basic Google searches for the application name or parent company.Closing WordsWindows 10 users can remove most system apps with a right-click on the listing in the start menu. While that is handy, Geek Uninstaller improves the process especially when it comes to the removal of multiple applications. You may select several apps at once in the program to uninstall them all in one quick operation. This means that you may even select them all to remove all installed Windows apps in one operation.SummaryArticle NameGeek Uninstaller: remove Windows appsDescriptionThe latest version of Geek Uninstaller, a third-party solution for Windows to remove installed software, supports removing Windows apps.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Bisexual asylum seeker says UK system is driving him to suicide

HIV on the rise in Playa del Carmen

August 29, 2019

first_imgPlaya del Carmen, Q.R. — Health organizations are concerned about the continually growing number of HIV cases in Playa del Carmen.According to Asociación Civil Vida Positiva, they have recorded an increase of 0.5 percent in HIV cases in Playa del Carmen from last year to the first quarter of this year. Reasons for the increase, they say, range from the decrease in condom use to fear of discrimination and ignorance toward prevention.“The main cause of progress is because people trust. They do not use a condom because they have confidence in their current partner but forget that they have a sexual past and therefore, may already be affected without presenting symptoms, which can take up to 10 years,” said Rudolf Geers, president of Asociación Civil Vida Positiva.Geers explained that among the general population, the use of condoms consistently in all sexual relationships is low since it is considered a contraceptive and not used in casual relationships despite both parties having multiple sexual partners in any given year.He said that the segment of greatest affectation are men who have sex with other men, noting a history of a decline in condom use of 20 percent since 2014.Geers stresses the importance that the general population be aware of the paradigm shift that is taking place regarding HIV. He explained that a person with HIV can have a normal life by accessing free antiretroviral treatment through IMSS, Issste and even through Seguro Popular.“The Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS has reported that people with HIV who take their antiretroviral treatment effectively and in whom the virus is suppressed to undetectable levels, are no longer infectious for an HIV negative couple.“For this reason, it is important to detect cases, channel them to treatment and maintain adherence to it,” Greers noted. The division of Preventive Medicine by the Integral Development of the Family in Solidaridad said that they maintain a permanent campaign in schools to provide an adequate sexual education that teaches kids about preventing risk situations that contribute to the increase of HIV cases.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)last_img read more
