“They gave us a pretty clear direction to proceed with the optimized three-lane. They gave us a little bit of permission to explore some slight variations to that.”According to Barrs, the optimized three-lane concept will feature two travel lanes with one turning lane in the middle of the street. In the winter, the turning lane will serve as a storage space for snow. The Optimized Three-Lane Concept. RABAT – Hundreds of protesters gathered Thursday to demand change on the anniversary of Morocco’s pro-reform movement, born out of Arab Spring unrest three years ago, but weaker than it once was.Members of the February 20 movement were joined in Rabat by unemployed school leavers and Berber activists as they waved banners and chanted slogans denouncing corruption, injustice and despotism outside parliament, an AFP journalist reported.A separate demonstration was planned in Casablanca. But the numbers — about 300 hundred protesters in Rabat — were far smaller than in 2011, when tens of thousands took to the streets to call for wholesale democratic reform.“Nothing has changed. Corruption remains. The government that came to power has not been able to respond to the demands of the people,” veteran human rights activist Khadija Ryadi told AFP.In response to the protests in 2011, the Moroccan king introduced a new constitution designed to curb his near-absolute powers and held snap polls in November that year that saw the moderate Islamist Party of Justice and Development elected for the first time. The PJD, which had campaigned in particular to battle corruption, brought real hope of change, and many activists remain disillusioned by the little that the Islamists have achieved since and that few of the constitution’s provisions have been implemented.“There is disappointment that very little has changed, but change will not happen in a few months,” said Qods, 23, attending Thursday’s protest.“The movement has been weakened, but no one can deny that it gave us a new constitution and an election that brought a new government to power.”“Its other great achievement is that there is no more fear to demand change, whether social or economic, even if the regime responds to those demands with repression,” the student added.Analysts say the turmoil in other North African countries where the 2011 uprisings toppled decades-old dictatorships, notably Libya and Egypt, was a key factor behind the decline in support for the February 20 movement. The election of the Islamist party and the sometimes harsh repression of protests also played their part.Scores of protesters have been arrested since the movement began, and activists say more than 30 of its members remain in prison.
DeMarcus Cousin Timberwolves (Kimani Okearah)NBA player DeMarcus Cousins offered to pay for the funeral of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, who was killed by Sacramento police. The former Sacramento Kings star reportedly reached out to Clark’s family to offer and pay for funeral expenses, a source confirmed to ESPN.Clark was gunned down by officers on Sunday in his grandmother’s backyard. The police mistook his cellphone for a weapon and reportedly released at least 20 shots at the unarmed victim. Clark’s family initially set up a GoFundMe page on Monday to raise money for the victim’s funeral costs according to Sacramento Bee. The 22-year-old’s family is demanding justice, along with many city protesters.Cousins’ kind gesture to the family of Stephon Clark came after protesters delayed a “Kings” game against the visiting Atlanta Hawks for about 20 minutes, ESPN reports. The NBA star is known for his generous acts and funded the funeral of Jaulon “JJ” Clavo, a local football player who perished in a shooting in 2015. He also hosted free basketball camps and bought a new scoreboard for Sacramento High School’s basketball gym.The now “Pelicans” basketball player was given the NBA’s first “NBA Cares Community Assist Award” for his charitable achievements in Sacramento; New Orleans; Mobile, Alabama and South Africa last October. He spent seven seasons with the Sacramento Kings and considers the city his “home.”
For all those efforts, who to blame is simple: Federer and his cohorts. They’ve made the final two rounds an exclusive club since Federer won his first Slam in 2003. He’s now won 18, while Rafael Nadal has 15, Novak Djokovic 12 and Stan Wawrinka and Murray three each. Since 2004, only four other men have won a major title, and only one for each: Gaston Gaudio, Marat Safin, Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic, who will play against Querrey in Friday’s semifinals. These top players tend to make it to the semifinals before they lose, making it difficult for anyone, let alone an American, to reach the semis. From the beginning of 2005 through the French Open last month, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray accounted for 57 percent of all the Grand Slam semifinal slots. Querrey, as happy as can be, is being realistic about his chances.“Marin [Cilic] is ranked, like, five,” Querrey said. “He’s right outside of the big four. That’s going to be a tough one.”That’s about the only thing Querrey has done wrong so far: Cilic is ranked sixth.CORRECTION (July 14, 1:40 p.m.): A photo caption in an earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Querrey was the first American to reach a Slam semifinal this decade. He is the first American man to do so. A chart in this article also has been updated to clarify that the data pertains only to men’s tennis. WIMBLEDON, England — And on the 2,933rd day, an American man reached a Grand Slam semifinal.Sam Querrey, a 29-year-old from California, ousted defending champion Andy Murray at Wimbledon on Wednesday and became the first American man to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam tournament since Andy Roddick here in 2009.Happiness rarely graces American men’s tennis these days. Fourteen years ago, Roddick won the U.S. Open. No American man has won a major since. Only one American male player besides Roddick has appeared in a major final since Roddick’s win: Andre Agassi, who lost to Roger Federer at the 2005 U.S. Open. Roddick played four more Grand Slam finals until 2009 and lost them all to Federer, including a heart-breaking five-set defeat at Wimbledon in 2009.Agassi retired after the 2006 U.S. Open. Roddick left the game on his 30th birthday in 2012 (less than three months older than Querrey is now). And no American man has broken into the elite ranks of men’s tennis since. Querrey is the first U.S. player to make his debut in a Slam semifinal since Robby Ginepri reached the final four of the 2005 U.S. Open. Getting to a semifinal took him forever: This was Querrey’s 42nd Grand Slam main draw, now a record for a first-time semifinalist in the Open era. By comparison, Agassi made his first Slam semifinal in 1988, less than two years after his first major appearance. In the next nine years, eight Americans would make their semifinal debuts.1 Aaron Krickstein, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, David Wheaton, Jim Courier, Patrick McEnroe, Todd Martin and MaliVai Washington. A handful of superstars has usually dominated men’s tennis. For a while, the U.S. had one or two of them, sometimes even more. Lately it’s had none, in part because the sport has become more global. Since the end of 2005, 24 non-American men from 19 countries have reached a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time, including Ivan Ljubicic (Croatia), Kei Nishikori (Japan), Fernando Gonzalez (Chile), and Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria). The globalization of tennis has slowed down America year after year. In the early Open era, beginning in 1968, into the 1970s and ’80s, America led the world in tennis training, practice and equipment. American men won loads of Grand Slam titles from 1968 through the 1990s, when John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Agassi, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier ruled. From 1990 to 1999, American men reached the semifinals or better 62 times at Grand Slams. All the while, though, foreign tennis training improved. By the time 2000 came along, diversity had climbed. American men reached the semifinals or better only 26 times from 2000 to 2009.And then, nothing. Players have rarely escaped the early rounds at the French Open, where clay feels foreign compared to American hard courts. Not that those hard courts help much. At the U.S. Open, American men haven’t looked like title contenders since Agassi and Roddick. The U.S. Tennis Association, so worried about that decline, has invested in a $63 million training center in Florida that has 100 courts.
Just after he signed a five-year deal at Camp Nou, Umtiti has now turned his head to Russia and the performance of the France international team there.Samuel Umtiti is now relaxed as he has already done everything he can for the near future – he is a part of the France team, he just signed a five-year contract extension with Barcelona, despite being linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this season, and is now in a relaxed mood.Winning the La Liga and Copa del Rey with the Catalan side, Umtiti will certainly play a key part in France’s participation in the tournament in Russia.Barca’s Umtiti out for weeks with broken bone George Patchias – September 13, 2019 Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a broken bone in his foot.Last week, Samuel Umtiti withdrew from…“Since my extension, I feel light, I can concentrate only on the field. I had already gone through that [transfers] in the European Championships. It was better to do so [in this way],” Umtiti said, according to Goal.“In this team, there are quite a few young players but some with experience. We must not force leadership. What makes the strength of this group is unity,” Umtiti added, addressing the international team.“We must play seriously but without pressure. We’re looking for landmarks, automatism. This is the purpose of the preparation.”
Gareth Southgate is ready for talks with the FA over a new deal after guiding the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals.Southgate and the FA agreed on a contract worth about £2.5 million a year, plus bonuses, to succeed Sam Allardyce in 2016. His current contract will run out in 2020 but has a built-in break option after the World Cup.A source close to the FA said: ‘Gareth is set to sign a new contract and both sides want to get a deal agreed quickly.’The option would have allowed the FA to replace Southgate on the cheap if he had failed to deliver on their expectations. But, after leading England to the nation’s best World Cup since Italia 90, Southgate is in a strong position, and the FA are keen to extend his deal.Crouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United. It could be worth up to £5m a year, including bonuses, to Southgate and ensure he will lead the country through the 2020 European Championship and the Qatar World Cup in 2022. The FA are also set to thrash out a settlement to release them from a £6m image rights contract.England players’ commercial work has been organized for the last decade by 1966 Entertainment, an outside agency whose contract runs until 2030.Following the World Cup in Russia, the FA want to work directly with England players rather than having to go through a third party for all sponsorship matters.A source close to the FA said: ‘It is in the interests of all parties to agree to a deal, so we need to come to a figure which compensates 1966 for loss of revenues.’
David ShankerChicago-based B2B publisher EnsembleIQ has tapped market research exec David Shanker as its next CEO, effective immediately, the company revealed Wednesday.Shanker arrives from Lightspeed Research, a subsidiary of Kantar, where he spent the last four years as CEO of the Americas. Prior to that, he was CEO of affiliate marketing platform PinchMe, and has also held executive roles at Ipsos Group and Information Resources Inc.“I see great potential in EnsembleIQ, its business units and its people,” said Shanker in a statement. “The time is right for dramatic growth that will catapult the company towards new heights of service and value in the retail, CPG, and technology industries.”The appointment ends a six-month search at EnsembleIQ that began when former CEO Peter Hoyt departed the company last August—a move reportedly initiated by the company’s board of directors.“When we appointed Peter as CEO of the combined companies, we recognized that Peter’s tenure in this role would not be long-term,” executive chairman Alan Glass told Folio: at the time. “This was something that matched up with Peter’s own personal goals and desires after the sale of his company.” Hoyt had been CEO of EnsembleIQ since 2016, shortly after the company was formed through the merger of three smaller firms: Stagnito Business Information, Edgell Communications, and the Path to Purchase Institute—where he had served as executive director prior to the merger.Following its subsequent acquisition of a handful of Canadian-based publications from Rogers Media late in 2016, EnsembleIQ now comprises 17 media brands that primarily serve the retail and CPG space, many of which carry their own complement of events and award programs. The company is owned by RFE Investment Partners, a Connecticut-based private equity firm that specializes in small to mid-market buyout transactions.

Ryan Poppe | Texas Public RadioThe Texas Capitol in Austin.Harvey could dominate much of the next Texas legislative session. House Speaker Joe Straus has told key committees to start working on long-term solutions to Harvey-related problems. He wants lawmakers ready to act the moment the Legislature convenes in 2019.Top priorities for Straus include flood control and other infrastructure investment. That’s not only to fix damage from Harvey, but also to prepare for future disasters. In addition, the speaker wants help for schools Harvey damaged and students the storm displaced.“The recovery from this thing is, it’s going to be long at best,” says State Rep. John Zerwas of Fort Bend County, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, “and it could be even more prolonged if we aren’t stepping in and making sure we understand what the resources that are available to us and making sure that the communities and ultimately the citizens will benefit from those things.”Zerwas says 2019 may seem like a long way off, but lawmakers will have to work out the framework of the budget by next summer. Haney was involved in a crash last year that killed two men, 58-year-old Duoc Van Le and his son, 32-year old Hong Phuc Le. The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement the charges against Haney can result in probation or up to twenty years in prison. Haney is accused of having driven after consuming muscle relaxers and a sedative and failing to maintain her lane. The District Attorney’s office says Haney is currently free on bond.Meanwhile, Haney is facing re-election in the May 5, 2018 uniform election. She faces two opponents.
The District’s missing person problem gained widespread attention when a misleading Instagram post went viral, prompting a national search for D.C.’s missing girls. But, left out of that were the missing boys.D.C. police report there are almost as many missing young men as there are missing young women. As of April 20 there have been reports of 550 missing young women and 534 missing young men this year, according to Aquita Brown, a spokesperson for the department.Jakeem Tariq Pope, 16, has been missing since April 17. (Courtesy Photo)Brown told the AFRO that statistics between missing young men and women are very similar, and are close to the same numbers from this time last year, “the numbers for the first quarter of 2017 are comparable to the first quarter of 2016.”The initial reports of an increase in missing people in D.C. was inaccurate. Brown said there hasn’t been a spike in cases in the last five years. “Men aren’t really identified as being victims. That’s the perception of it,” Henderson Long, founder of Missing and Exploited East of the River Ward 7 and 8, told the AFRO April 18.As a certified investigator of disappearing people, he said he represents all missing persons both women and men. However, society has a “soft part” for women and wants to help those who appear to be more vulnerable, Long, 48, said.“We should be more outraged for those who are more vulnerable,” Long continued. “For most women, [if they are] dealing with a 260-pound man, physically you would think that they are at a disadvantage.”Runaways can also be victims of sex trafficking, but officials said gender can be a barrier in identifying victims. “Trafficking victim identification is a challenge across the board; however, to the degree authorities are trained to identify human trafficking at all, far too many look primarily for female victims and often miss male victims they encounter,” according to a 2013 U.S. Department of State report on Human trafficking.D.C. police said the majority of cases involve people who leave home voluntarily and are located within two days, and there is no indication that these missing people are involved in human trafficking.Currently, law enforcement is working to locate Jakeem Tariq Pope, a 16-year-old boy who was last seen on April 17 in Northwest. According to police reports Pope is a repeat runaway and voluntarily left his family while at a store in the 5900 Block of Georgia Avenue, NW around 10 p.m.Pope is a Black male, with a medium brown complexion, 5’0” in height, 90 pounds, with dark brown eyes and black hair. Police said he was last spotted wearing a blue shirt, red shorts and Nike flip flops.Anyone with information of Pope’s whereabouts should contact police at 202-576-6768.
More information: One-pot room-temperature conversion of cyclohexane to adipic acid by ozone and UV light, Science 19 December 2014: Vol. 346 no. 6216 pp. 1495-1498. DOI: 10.1126/science.1259684ABSTRACTNitric acid oxidation of cyclohexane accounts for ~95% of the worldwide adipic acid production and is also responsible for ~5 to 8% of the annual worldwide anthropogenic emission of the ozone-depleting greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Here we report a N2O-free process for adipic acid synthesis. Treatment of neat cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, or cyclohexanone with ozone at room temperature and 1 atmosphere of pressure affords adipic acid as a solid precipitate. Addition of acidic water or exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation (or a combination of both) dramatically enhances the oxidative conversion of cyclohexane to adipic acid. An efficient catalytic process converts sugary biomass into a renewable feedstock for polymer production Explore further To make nylon, popularly used in panty hose, rope and a huge variety of other products, manufacturers first make adipic acid by mixing nitric acid with hexagon-shaped carbon molecules (cyclohexane) and other ingredients such as cobalt, copper, manganese, vanadate salts, and highly pressured oxygen. In addition to adipic acid, the process gives off nitrous oxide which is allowed to escape into the atmosphere where it harms the planet’s ozone layer (it’s also considered a greenhouse gas). So popular is nylon, and adipic acid (95 percent of it that’s made is used to make nylon), that prior research has found that up to eight percent of the eight million metric tons of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere each year, is the result of making adipic acid for nylon production. In this new effort, the pair of researchers describe a process they developed for creating adipic acid that doesn’t release any nitrous oxide at all—it’s also simpler and costs less.Instead of adding nitric acid to cyclohexane (or cyclohexanol, or cyclohexanone) the two added ozone bubbles and ultraviolet light. The UV light caused the ozone to break down to O2 releasing single highly reactive oxygen atoms. Those atoms attached themselves to the carbon molecules weakening their bonds and eventually causing the hexagon rings to break, which resulted in the formation of adipic acid. They note that the process doesn’t require high pressure or any other new ingredients.Excited by their discovery, the two researchers tried the same method on other, larger hydrocarbons—no report on what they found, but they imply that the possibilities are tantalizing, which suggests other researchers might be looking to do the same very soon—that could conceivably lead to the development of ways to create other common materials that aren’t so harmful to the planet. Hakim also proposed certain rules and regulations after discussing with the fire brigade.
