The Galaxy had the best fan support in the league, averaging 24,204 at Home Depot Center, and it was the league’s top road draw, too. L.A.’s success contrasted greatly with the struggles of its cross-stadium rival Chivas USA, an expansion team spawned from Mexican giant CD Guadalajara. Chivas’ owners expected to dominate MLS with mostly second-rate Mexican players, but the club posted the league’s worst record – 4-22-6 – and often played before crowds smaller than 6,000. As the year ends, Chivas already is on its third head coach and rethinking its philosophies. It was hardly the finest of the Galaxy’s 10 seasons, but its 2005 campaign might have been the club’s most memorable – and oddly satisfying. The Galaxy won its second Major League Soccer championship and captured the U.S. “double” – also claiming the U.S. Open Cup title – with a .500 club that, from the season’s start, struggled on the road and against established competition. L.A. headed to the playoffs with a 13-13-6 record – 44 goals for, 45 against – and winners of just one league game away from Southern California. Once the postseason began, the Galaxy was the MLS’ best team, mowing down Western champ San Jose, beating Colorado in Denver, then dictating play in MLS Cup 2005 last month in a 1-0 victory over New England on “Pando” Ramirez’s overtime volley. The pivotal figure was Landon Donovan, widely considered the most talented player the U.S. has produced. Donovan, a playmaking forward with uncommon vision and superb instincts, was acquired on the eve of the season opener, and when he was at his best, so was the Galaxy. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
