Last year, Catskill Chill said farewell to their longtime home at Camp Minglewood with an exceptional celebration, bringing out artists like Lotus, moe., Zappa Plays Zappa and a whole lot more. Among the many performers to grace the beloved festival’s stages was Twiddle, who played both a Dead Set and traditional set on the main stage.The Vermont jammers rocked hard during their hour and a half allotment from 2:30-4 AM, welcoming out guitarist Wiley Griffin and keyboardist Todd Stoops during various moments of their jam-heavy set. Last night, the Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, NY hosted some true all-star musicians for a worthy cause: clean energy. The Bowl was the center of a unique all-star jam that featured the likes of John Medeski, Billy Martin, Marco Benevento, DJ Logic, Ryan Montbleau Band, Yuka C. Honda and more! Each member of this unique supergroup called Mago came out and threw down for the occasion. The sheer force of each player’s musicianship was a true testament to the power of live music! Sure, The McLovins burst onto the scene in 2008—has it really been 9 & 1/2 years?—with their rendition of “You Enjoy Myself.” But even if you’re a parent trying to encourage your son or daughter to listen to music other than EDM or hip-hop or radio pop, more than likely, Phish, isn’t at the top of the list for most high schoolers. However, it might be now, after a high-school ensemble in Connecticut rode their rendition of “Divided Sky” to second place in competition following their rehearsal of the Phish song going viral earlier in the year and earned high remarks from Trey Anastasio himself. Don Binette, a percussion instructor at Naugatuck High School since 1999—his own alma mater—and a long time Phish fan, had an idea in 2009 after being inspired by Trey Anastasio’s orchestral version of the phish song “Divided Sky.” Why not perform the piece in competitions with the winter percussion ensemble he leads and that he had been a part of as a student. Binette sent off a few emails to the Phish organization, which eventually reached Don Hart—Anastasio’s string arranger—and was given the go ahead by Phish and Hart. Presented then to the schools’ musical director at the time, it was passed on and back-pocketed by Binette. Forward to 2016 and current percussion director Dave Pelaggi reached out to fellow instructors for ideas. Binette offered “Divided Sky.” Another email dashed off to Hart, “Hey Don, it’s 7 or 8 years later and we’re about to get this off the ground…” and Hart was all in, even offering his own thoughts on how the piece could be presented by a percussion ensemble. “We started rehearsals—not the piece—in December,” says Binette when asked about how long this ensemble has been performing the piece. “We did two pre-rehearsals to see what kids were interested so we could see how many kids we had to write the piece for. We actually started rehearsing the music in January. We missed eight rehearsals because of snow and that really set us back. But, pretty much every Tuesday and Thursday, and then we started adding in Saturday’s in February and started our competitive shows the second Saturday in March.”Among the students that showed an interest in the winter percussion ensemble was fifteen-year-old Emily Kropo, who as a freshman played piano in the school marching band. A natural talent and dedicated student, Kropo found her way to the marimba and vibes and other instruments in the percussion orchestra. Now a sophomore, she’s the lead instrumentalist in the ensemble, leading a group of twenty fellow students—for whom percussion is not their primary instrument and from several schools in Naugatauk including middle school—in competitive performances of the piece. She nor any of her fellow bandmates had heard the song before being presented with it for the performance. “No I hadn’t. I was very surprised, because I haven’t been in a winter ensemble before. For marching band, you usually do something that’s like … formal,” she states when asked about her thoughts upon hearing the song. “And this is formal, but it’s more like, jazz type of groove. So it’s surprising to me that we’re doing something that you can relax to and you can enjoy it while your performing it. And use your improvisation skills, like you can see where in the piece things need to be loud and things need to be soft.” She liked the song upon first looking it up on YouTube and even checked out another Phish song. She says that elements of this performance have helped expand her knowledge of the jazz style. “So I take that criteria that we learned in the winter percussion ensemble—cause it’s kind of jazzy—and I put it into the piano playing I do for the jazz band.”The hardest part she says is keeping the entire orchestra in rhythm and on tempo. “I guess the tough part is that I try to pulse to what the beat is and if the kids can’t get it in time or they can’t feel the beat as I feel the beat, it just throws everyone off track.” This performance is strictly done on percussion instruments and does not include a drum set drummer; Marimbas, xylophone, bells, orchestra bells, chimes, timpani, concert snares & toms & bass percussion are all utilized. Binette notes that the competition called for different styles of music with multiple musical elements. The piece performed is supposed to have high, fast, mild tempos; soft, subtle textures, slow pieces.The student performances are judged by two judges, one judging execution & technical performance, while the other listens for interpretation of the piece; highs and lows, crescendos for impact. “Divided Sky” encapsulates all of those elements he says, all in under seven minutes, the maximum amount of time allotted for performance. “As a percussionist myself, I know that there’s different time signatures, it gives different moods. It’s almost like a fugue—a variation of a theme throughout the whole thing,” he says. “With this show, we have a very specific purpose. As much as we are all about being competitive, we are all about competitively beating ourselves each week. We’re not necessarily looking to chase the group that’s ahead of us,’ Binette says. But competitive they were—each week improving their scores & placing second in every performance including the championship. “It’s a real dedicated group of kids,” Binette concludes. ‘Some of them are doing school sports now too. They’re going to school, doing their sports activity and heading here straight from that. I get tingles listening to them, when they hit the times and tempos right. The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park has seen some fairly incredible jams over the years, and the Suwannee Summer Clusterpluck was a fine addition to that hallowed tradition. The concept behind the two-day bluegrass Clusterpluck was a simple but solid one on the part of promoter Paul Levine: Gather some of the finest pickers in the land, add a proper stage and PA, and turn the musicians loose. The result was a weekend of musical mix-and-matching, with each set sporting a number of sit-ins and collaborations from the talented musicians on hand in addition to the super jam on the final night dubbed the “Summer Suwannee Clusterpluck.”Vince Herman Leads Wild 30-Minute “Midnight Rider” All-Star Jam At Clusterpluck [Video]Of course, when it comes to pulling together the right players for an event of this nature, it’s easier said than done. To make an event like Clusterpluck work, you need to find the right balance of talents and personalities, and for the final super jam, it doesn’t hurt to have someone who can act as an on-stage general to keep everyone on the same page. So when Levine was putting the event together, he knew there was only one choice to help him launch this new endeavor — the living embodiment of festival life himself, Leftover Salmon‘s Vince Herman. Herman, along with his partner-in-Salmon/crime Drew Emmitt, acted as the brain trust for the planned super jam, in addition to the duo taking on the responsibility of a set each day.The Wit And Wisdom Of Leftover Salmon’s Vince HermanGenerals need soldiers, and Clusterpluck filled out its ranks with the husband and wife duo of flat-picker guitar buzzsaw Larry Keel and his bass-playing better half Jenny Keel. Rising stars The Jon Stickley Trio brought their neo-classical, jazz-tinged bluegrass to add much-needed depth and sonic diversity to the mix as well. Outlaw bluegrass act Grandpa’s Cough Medicine, Pickled Holler, Albert Simpson and the right Reverend Jeff Mosier rounded out the stellar assortment of musical weapons at the disposal of the coming war on boredom.The various bands each took a set a day, eagerly welcoming their fellow players from the other acts for a weekend chock full of magical collaborative moments that simply can never be repeated. The off-the-cuff energy and improvisational nature of the performances made each song an adventure that was familiar but boldly retold for fresh ears. The fun didn’t even stop when the last notes rang out in the beloved Suwannee Music Hall, as the players took their musical circle out into the friendly confines of the park itself.The Spirit Of The Suwannee Music Park was founded so that bluegrass could flourish year round, and the Clusterpluck did a wonderful job of honoring that tradition. Fans of the genre and fans of music itself would do well to hope that the “Summer” in the title is an indication of a seasonal return for this first-time event. Over the past year, Florida’s The Heavy Pets have been busy in the studio, and the group is gearing up to release their latest full-length album, Strawberry Mansion, on February 23rd. The new album—which will be released independently with some help from All Points Boats and APB Studios—marks The Heavy Pets’ first full-length studio album since 2011’s Swim Out Past The Sun, though the band has released some EPs during that seven-year period. Strawberry Mansion will be available on major streaming sites and for purchase in double vinyl, CD, and digital formats.It’s clear that the buzz around the group’s new album is growing, and given the group’s feel-good new tunes, it’s clear why. We focused on a series of EPs over the last few years and felt it was time to get back in and produce a full-length record. We had a ton of material ready to go, so we felt it was time again to make a longer statement. I think we really found a process that works for us—recording at a variety of South Florida studios including our own, and finishing everything at the Power Station, where we have done the bulk of our work the last few years.L4LM: I’m assuming that’s a guest vocalist on “Shahryar’s Rage”. Who are the special guests on the album?JL: Actually, no. That’s our very own Jim Wuest singing lead on “Shahryar’s Rage”, with the rest of us singing some pretty rich harmonies in the back. It’s a cool sound and very uniquely Jim. We do have some South Florida friends we are proud to have on the record, including Michael McCleary (guitarist of Surfer Blood) on trombone and Rob Smiley on saxophone for the closing track “Holy Holy.”L4LM: Is that you or Mike playing slide on “The Ibis”? Sounds very Derek Trucks-inspired. Totally digging it. JL: That’s our dear friend, the one-and-only Roosevelt Collier! Ha, I wish I could play like that. He absolutely slayed that track—took my vision to a whole different level—but this should come as no surprise to me after working with him for so many years. That’s what he does. I absolutely love the parts he laid down, and the back and forth he does with Jim on the Hammond for the solo section.L4LM: What was some inspirations for the music y’all wrote on the album? JL: “The Ibis” was literally inspired by me waking to a yard full of birds one morning and doing a little research. Fascinating creatures. “Real News” I’d written years ago and thought pretty apt for today. There is so much going on on this record, and it is taking me back to our beginnings—a group of friends with a big group of songs. Blues guitarist/singer Gary Clark Jr. has released the second single set to appear on his forthcoming solo album, This Land. The new song is titled “I Walk Alone”, and follows the previously-shared “This Land” which arrived early last month to go with the album’s announcement. Clark had also debuted another new song titled, “Feed The Babies”, with help from Jon Batiase during his live performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back on January 10th as well.“I Walk Alone” hears Clark returning to his bluesy-rock roots, as the song features an abundance of heavy distortion to go with a pulsating drum beat. The heavy, slightly darker instrumentation of the song is balanced by the glistening sounds of a keyboard, which ring out every so often to go with as Clark’s vocal performance. For someone who’s isn’t quite known for their vocal octave range, Clark really impresses in reaching a pretty high vocal register throughout the 3:45-minute recording. Speaking of the vocals, Clark doesn’t hide the fact that he’s really channeling his inner-darkness while belting out the lyrics, “I move in darkness ’cause the darkness always soothes me/It’s natural, but I don’t wanna be alone.”Fans can tune into the official audio in the video below to hear the new song in full.Gary Clark Jr. – “I Walk Alone”[Video: Gary Clark Jr.]Clark also took to his social media outlets on Thursday to share the announcement that he’ll be making his performance debut on Saturday Night Live later this month by appearing on the episode scheduled to air on February 16th. On Sunday, following New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival2019’s final day, Dumpstaphunk made their way to Tipitina‘s for a special late-night performance. Up-and-coming guitar virtuoso Marcus King was the evening’s featured guest, joining the band for a series of covers and impressive improvisational exploration.Dumpstaphunk—comprised of Ivan Neville, Ian Neville, Tony Hall, Nick Daniels III, and Alvin Ford Jr.—opened up their show with a full-throttle double bass duel between Tony and Nick. Following approximately an hour of Dumpstaphunk’s firey-hot funk jams, the band invited up Marcus King for the remainder of their main set. With the addition of King, the funk warriors worked through “I’d Rather Be (Blind, Crippled and Crazy)”, a soul tune originally recorded in 1973 by O.V. Wright. Dumpstaphunk and King moved forward with choice covers, including B.B. In late-March, Ghost Light released their long-awaited debut studio album, Best Kept Secrets. The album has been in the works for the better part of two years.
